In competition, the horse is more than something to ride on - it's an important member of the vaulting team. The horse even gets a score just like the vaulters. Vaulting horses are carefully chosen and trained for their job. A horse that is patient, who likes kids and getting a lot of attention is perfect. Horses must be at least 6 years old, so they've finished growing. They train for up to 4 years, getting used to the longe line and to the jolts and jumps of vaulters. They are crossed-trained in dressage, trail riding, long-reining, and vaulting so they stay healthy and have fun. They also receive plenty of snacks & hugs! We have used Sweet P - a 15 year old Belgian/Quarter horse mare - for 3 years. In May '98, we purchased Murdock, a 17 hand Percheron gelding, who is learning basic vaulting skills and how to be a good riding horse. We hope to use him for individuals vaulting next year, and for team events by 2000. UPDATE Congratulations to Sweet P, who won the 1998 Region 3 Horse of the Year Award! |
